When is the best age to photograph my baby?

Why 7-9 Months Is the Perfect Age for Natural Family Photos

It really is the sweetest in-between stage.

This recent at-home session reminded me exactly why I love photographing families at this age — especially in the comfort of their own home, with the family dog padding in and out of the frame.

“We’re awkward in photos…”

Before the session, mum told me she loved the idea of beautiful family photographs but hated the thought of posing. She felt awkward. Worried the baby wouldn’t “perform.” Wondered whether the dog would behave.

And honestly? That’s exactly why I do what I do.

There was no stiff posing. No pressure. No “everyone look at the camera and smile.”

Instead, we let the morning unfold naturally.

Baby sat proudly on the bed and sofa. Mum and Dad sat close, chatting and playing. The dog gently wandered over, curious and protective, sneaking in for a sniff and a cuddle. Those moments — the real ones — are where the magic lives.

Should we book an outdoor or home photography session?

Short answer both are adorable and it just depends on the time of year. At eight months, babies are deeply connected to their environment. They feel safe at home. They recognise the sofa, the rug they roll across, the kitchen where they watch you cook. Whereas outdoors (if warm enough) they will feel relax in the fresh air and babies love being outdoors.

That comfort means:

  • More relaxed smiles

  • Genuine giggles

  • Beautiful eye contact

  • And cuddles that feel natural, not prompted

I talk you through both options and together we can make a plan.

Are pets involved in our family photograph shoot?

Dogs are part of the story. They’re often your first baby. They’re gentle, watchful, sometimes slightly confused by this small human who has taken centre stage. Including them makes your photographs feel complete — like a true snapshot of this season of life.

Gentle Guidance, Never Stiff Posing

If you’re someone who feels awkward in photos, I promise you — you don’t need to “know what to do.”

I gently guide you the whole way through. I’ll suggest sitting close, whispering to your baby, pulling them in for a cuddle, or playing a little game. I keep you talking, moving, interacting.

It feels more like a slow morning together than a photoshoot.

I’m simply there to notice the way your baby reaches for your face.
The way your dog rests their head on your knee.
The way you instinctively kiss the top of that soft, wispy hair.

Those are the moments you’ll want to remember.

Why 7-9 Months Truly Is the Sweet Spot

Before the full-speed toddler dash begins.

They can:

  • Sit confidently

  • Laugh easily

  • Engage with you beautifully

  • Show off their blossoming personality

But they still want you. They still lean in. They still light up when you walk into the room.

It’s such a fleeting, heart-melting stage.

If you’ve been waiting for the “right time” for family photos — this is it.

Not when the house is perfect.
Not when you feel completely confident.
Not when everything is calm (because when is it ever?).

But right now — in the middle of the mess, the cuddles, the dog hair, the giggles.

That’s the magic worth remembering.
